Plymstock United 2-4 Ottery St Mary

Ottery St. Mary, playing their tenth away league game already this season, pulled off the result of the day in the Devon League when they returned from Plymstock United following a 4-2 victory.

With the appointed referee making a late withdrawal from the game, it was up to the two sides to first decide on an official and eventually the match went ahead with the Plymstock linesman in charge.

Strong intensity from the start was rewarded when the Otters took the lead after 21 minutes, Lewis Wilson getting in behind the defence and squaring the ball for Mario Pislaru to finish first time.

They increased the lead ten minutes before the break when a Ferenc Bodors shot took a deflection on its way into the net.

Plymstock hit back almost immediately through Charlie West and levelled the scores at 2-2 early in the second half with a strike from Matt Goodwin.

Ottery stepped up their game in a bid to take all three points and got in front again on the hour when Bodors got his second goal of the game with a powerful shot into the far corner.

Ethan Matthews put the icing on the cake with a fourth goal ten minutes from the end, scoring with a drive from the edge of the box.

The Man of the Match Award went to defender Brandon Green and Ottery team boss Rikki Pitter told the News, “Great character was shown by all of them and it was great to get back to winning ways.”

Topsham Town 3-1 Beer Albion

Beer Albion beat Topsham Town in the Devon Premier Cup a week previously but they were unable to emulate the feat as they went down 3-1 when the sides met again in the league.

In a game where both sides employed the long ball far too often, Beer had the better of the early chances with one effort hitting the post and two others being saved by the goalkeeper.

A defensive mix-up led to Topsham taking the lead through Sam Clarke but The Fisherman hit back quickly as Billy Knox did

well to win the ball in midfield and Taylor Rooke outfoxed three defenders before squaring for Aaron Daniels to score.

The second period was an even affair until the final fifteen minutes when more defensive frailty allowed Lee Radford to put Topsham in front and Matt Bye to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot after a rash challenge in the box.

Albion manager Mark Rooke told the Herald, “Neither team played well but we are bitterly disappointed not to get anything from the game. Once again it was mistakes that cost us.”

Jayden Rooke had another commanding game in midfield but the Man of Match Award finally went to goal-scorer Aaron Daniels.

Ipplepen Athletic 2-1 Budleigh Salterton

Budleigh Salterton again paid the penalty of missing chances when they went out of the Walter Parson League Cup at Ipplepen Athletic.

Lee Fenner gave Athletic the lead from the penalty spot after a foul in the box but Budleigh were on level terms soon afterwards when Jake Tinsley set up Jamie Williams.

Greg McMartin could have given Budleigh the lead just before the break following a goalkeeping error but he shot wide when well placed.

Budleigh squandered more opportunities throughout the second half before Ipplepen nicked the tie two minutes from the end when Mason Joint took advantage of a loose ball.

There was good news for Budleigh earlier in the week though when Stu Tuckett accepted the manager’s role on a permanent basis. The club have also been awarded the recent Devon Premier Cup match at Dartmouth after the home side was found guilty of fielding an illegible player.

This Saturday (October 16th) Beer Albion host Plymouth Marjon at the Furzebrake, Ottery St. Mary are home to Ipplepen Athletic and Budleigh Salterton make the trip to Newtown.

The Beer and Budleigh Salterton games kick off at 2.15pm while Ottery make a start at 3.00pm.
