An annual ladies' invitation game has returned home to Sidmouth, with with triumphant victory.

In this year's Spears Trophy, Sidmouth fielded six teams against six different local invited clubs namely Budleigh, Madeira, Seaton, Ottery, Honiton and Exonia.

The trophy was reportedly donated 50 years ago by Mr Spears in memory of his wife.

Each invited team locked horns with a unique Sidmouth team for just three ends, not sufficient time to fully grasp outdoor green play.

Yet, the afternoon was met with great enthusiasm.

Especially the pleasant weather, engaging company and the delicious Bowlers Tea made the experience a joy for all.

Club member Jill Bishop organised the day, backed by the power of countless volunteers, all offering selfless help with everything from food to clearing up.

This year, the trophy is back home where it belongs, and all thanks to Janet Barton, Mary Meadows and Brenda Somerfield.

On the visiting side, Budleigh emerged as the top team.

In other news, Sidmouth ladies have also performed commendably in the County Over 55's Pairs.

The coming games will see Carol Timms and Sue Turner pitted against Brenda Somerfield and Jill Bishop, with the winners proceeding to the Section 3 semi-final.

Adding to the excitement, the County Over 55's Singles will be graced by the face-off between Jane Painter and Sue Turner.

Meanwhile, Sidmouth is making waves in the popular Men's Exeter and District Over 60's Triples League as well.

Formerly classified as Teams A, B, C, and D, the four teams, now bearing unique names, mostly of marine inspiration, have been showing promising performances.

In Division 2, the 'Sharks' have clinched victory in half of the played games; while in Division 3, the 'Sunrise' have marked four wins out of eight.

On the contrary, the teams in Division 7, 'Snappers' and 'Starfish', each have a single victory to their names out of the seven and eight games played respectively, leaving ample room for improvement in the remaining rounds.

Overall, it's been a period of lively sporting activity, garnering eager participation and fostering a true sense of community spirit.

Here's to celebrating the victories, and good luck to all for the upcoming games.
