On a grey and windy day in North Devon, the Sidmouth Seniors Team played their annual friendly match against Libbaton Golf Club.
The team of 12 was made up of experienced veterans and players who have either recently started playing (many via the Sidmouth Club’s Academy) or recently come back to golf.
All acquitted themselves very well, enjoying the camaraderie and challenges of the long golf course.
Home advantage is always key, but to the team's credit the result was only determined by the last match – going in Libbaton’s favour.
The result was 3 ½ to 2 ½.
Sidmouth stars of the day were Ian Philips and James Scrimshaw who won by 5 holes, and Philip Spencer who not only won his match but was the closest to the pin on both the visitors and home holes.
The course was looking great with tremendous hospitality and lovely food.
We are now looking forward to the return match in October.
Sidmouth junior member, Archie Griffiths, travelled to Cumberwell Park, Wiltshire on Tuesday to take part in the U12 area finals.
This followed his win at Woodbury a couple of months ago.
This was a 9 hole U12 competition which he went on to win with a score of -1 to win by 3 shots.
Archie has now qualified for the National Finals to be played at the Belfry on August 28, a day before the British Masters.
The club sends their congratulations to Archie and looks forward to hearing great news in August.
In the Sidmouth Jewellers Friday Stableford, Graham Bess posted an excellent 44 points to take the top spot from Mike Knight with 41 and Dave Richards with 38.
On Saturday, the winners of Div 1 of the Gater Electrical Contractors sponsored monthly medal were Bob Johnston with a net 64 from Jamie Souttar 68 and Anthony Griffiths 69.
Jon Evans won Div 2 with an excellent 5 under par 61.
Stuart Ruffle 66 and Mike Hobbs 67, took the minor places.
Sidmouth played their first round of the Palairet Trophy at Dainton against Okehampton on Sunday.
In a very tight match, Sidmouth prevailed, winning 3 & 2 with Graham Davies and Steve Crabb having to go up the 19th before getting the win to take Sidmouth through to the next round to meet East Devon in early July.
