Sidmouth 2nds hosted high flying Kentisbeare at Manstone Lane on Saturday on a cold but bright and sunny afternoon. The home side knew it was going to be a hard-fought game with the visitors arriving on a four-game unbeaten run.
The hosts started the game well, making the most of their youth and energy. Sidmouth got some joy from moving the ball out wide to wing-backs Kieran White and Mark Patton, who were a constant threat behind the Kentisbeare defence with their tireless running and intelligent link-up play with the midfield.
Joe Anning and Scott Hughes were also a constant threat up front, linking well and making good runs beyond the Kentisbeare defensive line. Numerous chances were being created but not converted.
Sidmouth finally got their reward for their endeavours midway through the first half when the ball broke on the edge of the box for Frank Long to hit a low shot beating the Kentisbeare ‘keeper.
Although Sidmouth were deservedly 1-0 up, Kentisbeare were also playing well and pressing the Sidmouth defence, who were holding firm. The central defensive trio of Jack Howe, Harry Saunders and Matt Salter all putting in impressive performances.
With half-time approaching, Kentisbeare finally broke through the Sidmouth defence, with good play down right hand-side resulting in a cross from the byline and a headed finish from six yards out.
The second half was a continuation of the first, two good sides playing some good football under increasing difficult conditions as the pitch started to cut up. Chances were being created by both sides but not being converted.
With time running out, Kentisbeare had the opportunity to go ahead when a penalty was awarded for a challenge on the edge of the box. The spot-kick was skyed over the bar though, so the score remained at 1-1.
Both sides continued to work hard to get a second goal, which eventually came for the visitors. A challenge on the Sidmouth defender left the Kentisbeare attacker clean through on goal, who calmly slotted past the Sidmouth goalkeeper.
The home side didn’t give up and continued to search for a much-deserved equaliser right up until the final whistle, which just didn’t materialise. The game finished Sidmouth 1 Kentisbeare 2.
