There was excellent news for the Sidmouth Bowls Club Ladies Mason's team this week, writes Carol Smith.
This National Knockout Competition is played one rink home and one away simultaneously. We thought our draw was a bit tough having to play against Honiton’s finest, who, after playing eight games, reached the National Final of this Competition last year. This they just lost by eight shots overall to Nottingham.
Our home rink of Jean Brimson, Anita Mason, Carol Smith and skip Jill Bishop had a great game to win 24 – 12. The away rink of Mary Turner, Karen Hollingdale, Sue Turner and skip Jane Painter managed to keep the losses down against one of Devon’s best skips, to lose 15 – 23.
A great result with an overall win for Sidmouth at 39 -35. Our next opponents will be Mid Devon (Tiverton) on Friday, December 8.
Jill Bishop and Brenda Somerfield played the first round of the County Pairs at Madeira against Dee Norman and Dee Williams, and another win by just two shots at 17 -1, so they now proceed to play yet another pair from Madeira, but this time on our home green. It would be good to have a few supporters on Friday, December 15 at 10am.
Even more good news: Another pair of Sidmouth Ladies have won their first round of the County Pairs. Karen Hollingdale and Sue Turner played at home to Honiton’s Di Morley and Yvonne Williams.
On the penultimate 20th end, our pair scored a great five shots. This put them in a very good position going into the final end, one shot up at 20 - 19. But, on this final end, Honiton were holding three shots for the game. However, not to be deterred, skip Sue drew a great shot to win the game 21 - 19.
Last Sunday. it was our ladies drawn pairs club competition. There were only four teams playing on this day and the winners were Lynn Pike and Sue Turner, 21 -17, and Debbie Leeds and Jill Bishop, 17 - 15.
