Sidmouth bowler Jill Bishop entered a Singles Tournament at Isca BC in Exeter, writes Carol Smith, involving eight men and eight ladies from various Devon Clubs. Jill did extremely well and, on reaching the semi-final to play against Sue Harriet from Madeira, she needed to play a sudden death end to win.
Jill then went into the final to play Cassidy Lenton from Exonia BC. Unfortunately, Jill did lose but just to give you all an insight into Cassidy's bowling career, she has won many National Competitions indoor and outdoor, plays for England and just a few years ago in the EIBA Ladies Rankings was number 10 in England.
After being knocked out of the Yetton Trophy, Sidmouth Bowls Club ladies had a second bite of the cherry playing in the Yetton Plate.
Sadly, it was not a good result. The ladies played against Madeira ladies, who just lost the Yetton Trophy by two shots, so were definitely out to beat us. Although losing on aggregate, we did have one rink that played away and had an outstanding win of 30 - 16 - well done to Mary Meadows, Elaine Reed, Zena Johnson and skip Jane Painter.
We also had one home rink that had a very credible draw, they were Jean Brimson, Sue Clint, Anita Mason and skip Jill Bishop, 14 all. Our second home rink lost by 11 shots and the second away rink suffered a tough defeat, leaving the aggregate score Sidmouth 58 Madeira 89.
Sidmouth men played the Denny Plate against Torbay. Both home rinks did reasonably well one, with a loss of just three shots and the other by eight shots. Unfortunately, the away rinks didn't fare very well, so that's it for another year. It must be said that several of the Torbay players were probably half the age of most Sidmouth players!
Captain Sue took two mixed triple rinks away to our friends at Budleigh Salterton. A lovely friendly afternoon was had by all, with the bonus of winning on both rinks. Chris Radburn, John Mason and skip Sue Turner had a great win of 20 - 9, while Wilf Radburn, Anita Mason and skip Brian Smith won 20 - 12 for a final score of Sidmouth 40 Budleigh 21.
Last week, Sidmouth Men had a friendly game against Devon County President Chris Fenner and County players from various Devon Clubs. A very friendly afternoon finished with a lovely ‘bowlers tea’ provided by our catering guru Debbie Leeds with the help of Lynn Pike and Sue Doughty.
The bowling by Sidmouth men didn't quite come up to the standard of the tea, as they lost overall 75 – 42. However, one rink did manage a credible draw and those players were Brian Deam, Wilf Radburn, Peter Mison and skip David Timms, 21 all.
Sidmouth Men also played the National Over 60's Double Rink. This is a knockout competition played in the format of one rink home and one away. The first draw was against Torbay's A team. It was a very competitive, close game for our away rink, with Sidmouth just managing to pip Torbay to the post to win 16 - 15. Very well done to Andrew Lowe, Paul Irvine, John Mason and skip Ken Wheeler. Sadly, our home rink lost, which meant the aggregate score was Sidmouth 29 Torbay 37.
Isca sent three full mixed rinks to play another very friendly afternoon, played in fantastic spirit. Of the three rinks, we lost on one, drew on another and had a gigantic win on the rink of Brian Deam, Vince Ferrante, Ron Clint and skip Marie Timms of 22 – 7, giving Sidmouth the win overall at 47 -45.
