Our friends from Madeira BC arrived at Sidmouth BC for a friendly, writes Carol Smith, and it was an excellent match, played in great spirit.
Amongst their players, I noticed several lady County bowlers but Sidmouth fared pretty well, winning on one rink and managing a draw on another. Our winning rink was Chas Coates (good to see him back bowling), Derek Mountford, Deborah Robertson and skip Mick Cox, 17 - 12. The overall score in Madeira's favour was 93 - 74.
Dawlish Marina BC were the next visitors and what a lovely friendly team they were. However, the scores were not too friendly on our part, as we won on all 4 rinks for a final score of Sidmouth 72 Dawlish 49.
We had two top rinks, both winning by 14 shots each. They were Liz Boyle, David Parsons, Ann Capon and skip Mick Cox, also Julie Wevill, Steve Boyle, Janice Quinn and skip Christopher Ward.
The rink of Christine Ward, Ron Peppin, Marie Timms and skip Jerome Hagen won 14 - 12 and Captain of the day Paul Irvine's rink had a great finish, going into their final end with a draw of 12 all. Holding three shots to win, the opposition skip managed to remove 2 of the 3woods, then drew shot bu Paul, with his last wood also managed a better draw to win the game 13 - 12. Paul's team of Wendy Cox, Brian Deam and Ed Colman were obviously delighted.
In the semi-final of our club competition, The Beer Cup, there was the very unusual outcome of both winning teams scores being 19 -7. The finalists are Sue Clint, Wilf Radburn, Zena Johnson and Mike Borst against Ron Clint, Janice Quinn, Anita Mason and John Chew.
Not such good news on a couple of Section Finals, both on our green. In the Ladies Benevolent Triples, our trio of Karen Hollingdale, Anita Mason and skip Jane Painter played against a strong team from Seaton, and sadly lost.
In the Over 55's County Singles, Jane Painter lost to Sue Evans of Honiton. No shame there, as Sue has won several section finals and has once again qualified to go to Leamington Spa for the National Finals.
