A folk festival at Sidmouth Bowls Club, alongside the Sunset Umbrella players enjoying an evening barbecue made for a party atmosphere, writes Carol Smith.
Liz and Steve Boyle have now stepped back after running this very sociable evening Umbrella Competition for several years. Luckily for us, Jerome Hagen and Ron Peppin have agreed to take over.
Four rinks and 32 players turned out to bowl and many family members also came to join in for the food and a brilliant social evening for Sidmouth BC.
In an away friendly at Feniton, Christine Ward, Sue Clint, Stuart Thomson and skip Jerome Hagen recorded a winning rink for Sidmouth, 21 - 19. However, it wasn't a good overall result for Sidmouth, as we lost 67 to 49.
In the Ladies Exeter and District Triples League, the latest results were good for our Blue team. After 10 of the 17 games, they are sitting third in this First Division.
In the Mens Over 60's Exeter and District Triples League, the A team have climbed to third place in Division 3. The B team are just about halfway in Division 2. The C team, in Division 7, are third from bottom and the D team have come on a bundle, now being exactly halfway, also in Division 7.
Last Sunday was the semi-final of our club's Victory Bowl Competition on a sunny afternoon for bowls. The game between Liz Boyle, Karen Hollingdale and skip John Mason against Julie Wevill, Steve Boyle and skip Wilf Radburn was so very close most of the way and going into the final end Wilfs team were just two shots up.
Liz, on the opposite team, managed to trail the jack, so when Steve (her husband) went to bowl, they were several down. Steve played a great wood, drawing for shot and it stayed in place for a 13 – 10 win.
The other semi-final was so different with a runaway victory for Keith Pollitt, Marie Timms and skip Sue Turner with 26 shots against just nine for their opponents Allan Davis, Paddy Chew and skip Jason Quinn.
