There is no denying it has been a tough baptism for Sidbury Cricket Club in E Division East of the Tolchards Devon Cricket League.
Just one win prior to Saturday’s trip to Braunton, few gave Sidbury much hope against a side still in reach of the top two promotion places, but Storm Antoni stirred something special from deep within.
Batting first in tricky conditions, the opening duo of Ed Chester (18) and Will Bidder (34) gave Sidbury a solid platform, and when the Paget boys (Oliver and Alex) came to the crease, Braunton found themselves up against a determined duo.
Oliver patiently compiled an unbeaten 70 from 74 balls, while Alex bludgeoned his way to 68 not out from 49 balls, including five sixes. It all added up to an impressive total of 207-2 from 45 overs.
Visibly rocked by their visitors, Braunton also had no answer to the bowling attack. Toby Whitfield and Damien Armes swiftly removed the openers before Alex Paget tore through the middle order. Chester took care of the tail, as Braunton were dismissed for 158. Paget’s figures of 4-11, alongside his brilliance with the bat, made for a very satisfying day.
Sidbury are still 46 points from safety with just four weeks remaining in the season but at least they have shown their quality and fighting spirit. Third-place Honiton visit on Saturday and they will be wary of a side growing in confidence.
Like Sidbury, Sidmouth 3rds face an almighty scrap for survival, as they lie second bottom in the division following the cancellation of their weekend trip to Chardstock. Sidmouth host Bradninch & Kentisbeare this weekend.
On a sour note, Sidbury CC were the victims of mindless vandalism on the night of Thursday, July 27. A large section of the practise nets were cut open and there was minor damage to the boundary ropes.
Despite this setback, the club is looking forward to the sixth edition of the Dentist’s Decanter, an annual tournament held in tribute to former player, groundsman, club secretary, scorer, fixture secretary and club legend Chris Bishop.
The event is scheduled for midday on Sunday, August 27 and there will be plenty of food and drink available, plus some fun cricket to enjoy at the club.
