Sidmouth Bowls Club entertained a team from Norwest BC, Bath, and what a great crowd, writes Carol Smith.
Despite a little drizzle, they played extremely well with an overall win of 138 - 99. Over the six rinks, we lost four, drew one and won one by just one shot. The winning rink of Brian Deam, Ann Capon, Marie Timms and skip Jerome Hagen recovered from five down to score an amazing six on the final end for victory.
In another invitation game at Ottery St Mary, our team of Christine and Chris Ward, and Sue and Ron Clint finished an excellent first of the invited teams.
For the last couple of years, Maggie Masson has organised our very well supported Mixed Umbrella Competition. Maggie has been a member of our club for several years but has now decided, with her husband Crawford, to return to their homeland of Scotland. Maggie is quite a character and we will certainly miss her, but wish her every happiness. Deborah Robertson has kindly taken on the task.
Sidmouth men’s County Trophy players welcomed Madeira to the club but, despite winning on two of the four rinks, we went down to a 66 – 85 overall defeat.
Four mixed rinks from Chardstock arrived for a friendly game on another showery day and Sidmouth won on three of the four rinks. Our fourth rink lost by just one shot and we won overall 84 - 41. Our top rink was Brian Deam, Linda Knight, Marie Timms and skip Christopher Ward, with a magnificent score of 29 - 8.
The next friendly was at home to Bradninch, who brought five triples along to play. The sun shone for this one, which obviously makes it a more enjoyable game. A very close game saw Sidmouth winning overall by just four shots, 61 - 57.
Our top rink was Derek Mountford, Scott Archer and skip Janet Thomson with a great score of 26 - 9. Unfortunately for us, another rink lost by a similar amount and yet another didn't even score before tea, but hey ho, we know it can all change after tea and it certainly did for them, scoring two shots on the final end to win.
