Sidmouth bowler Jane Painter travelled to Paignton BC for the Ladies Major 2 Wood Singles County Competition, with another three rounds to qualify for Leamington Spa to play against other Counties, writes Carol Smith.
After defeating Helen Ellis from Crediton and Barnstaple’s Chris Lerwick, the final game was against Kelly Atkinson from Kings, Torquay. Although a great game which went to 20 ends, with just one end to play, Jane was unable to catch up. I certainly cannot remember any Sidmouth player getting so far in recent years.
Like Jane, Ken Wheeler, after winning our Section 3 played at Starcross BC in The Devon County Men’s Singles. Unfortunately, Ken just fell short in his first round, so Leamington will have to wait.
There was a good result in Sidmouth Men’s County Trophy match at home to Feniton. Sidmouth played away to Feniton in June and sadly lost on all four rinks. Not this time, they won on three of the four rinks, with an excellent overall score of Sidmouth 82 Feniton 65. The top rink was Alun Brown, Paul Irvine, Roger Stewart and skip Ken Wheeler, 26 - 9.
The Men’s Exeter and District Over 60's Triples League comprises eight divisions and Sidmouth have four teams playing. Our "B" team, who won the 3rd division last year, have battled valiantly in the second tier, winning four of the 11 games played.
The "A" team, who were demoted last year, are fighting back, so far winning seven of the 11 played. The "C" team are doing pretty good, having won five of their 10 played and now fourth in Division 7, but there is work to do for the "D" team.
Sidmouth have two teams in the Ladies Triples League, both in the first of the two divisions. The Blues have won three of the six played and the Yellows just one of their eight matches played.
However, although there are a few experienced players in the Yellows team, the majority are made up of newer but very keen members, so it would almost be better for them if they were in the Second Division, where they could work their way up gradually and probably enjoy winning a few more games.
