The recent blazing sun has started to bleach out the fairways at Sidmouth Golf Club and the ball is running faster as we get into early summer.
Fortunately, water from the Sidmouth bore holes on the course allows the greens to stay in top condition to ensure the club competitions go ahead as normal.
The Upper Crust sponsored Monday stableford saw Chris Lewis post an excellent 41 points to win Division 1 from Mike Gosling 39 and John Rockey on 38. Young Charlie Roberts won Division 2, also on 41, ahead of David Millen and Terry Coldridge both posting 38.
Moving on to the following week, Brian Davies secured Division 1 with 40 points from Ben Hodgson and Anthony Griffiths, both with 39. The Division 2 winner, David Millen, amassed an excellent 43, beating Graham Lanceley and Paul Gibbons, both having posted 41.
The Sidmouth Jewellers Friday Stableford saw Mike Gosling win on countback on 41 from Howard Cushing, with Ben Hodgson taking third with 40.
This week, we have our Club Captain John Spiller-Jones with Lewis White and David Bater completing 100 holes of golf in one day at Sidmouth Golf Club. They are completing this golfing marathon in aid of the Captain’s chosen charity for 2023, the Devon Air Ambulance.
The Grandmother’s Shield was played earlier this month, again in glorious sunshine, with Sheila Faulkner winning on countback with a great score of 38. Linda Reynolds was runner-up. Sheila also managed a ‘2’ on the 11th hole.
A good field of ladies played in the Arthur Skinners President Cup on June 14 - it was a hot day and the format is a Par /Bogey competition. Finishing in first place with +5 was Catherine Walden, with Ann Blackler coming second with +3.
The hot temperatures are certainly making the play a little more taxing and keeping the greenkeeping staff busy!
We still await the final matches of the President’s and Sheelah Creasy teams to see how the teams have done overall and the club knockouts are still in progress.
