Sidmouth Bowls Club Ladies’ team of eight players has played their first round of this most prestigious County InterClub Competition.
Plymstock A were the opposition on the neutral greens of Bovey Tracey in the knock-out competition. One of our 4's led the whole way, whilst the others struggled a little trying not to lose too many shots.
It was getting really tight towards the end, as, on the 18th end, the score was 28-28. However, it was in our favour on the last three ends our opponents, with Sidmouth triumphing 36-30.
Well done to Jean Brimson, Anita Mason, Brenda Somerfield and skip Jill Bishop, 23-8, and Karen Hollingdale, Mary Turner, Zena Johnson and skip Jane Painter, 13-22. The next round is against Plymstock's B team on June 14.
Ken Wheeler has won through to win section 3A of the County Singles and has progressed to the last 16 in Devon, with the next challenge on July 16 at Starcross.
In the County Foxlands knock-out, Sidmouth men prevailed in a local derby with Ottery St Mary.
Although our home rink of John Richards, John Chew, John Mason and skip Brian Smith lost by six shots, the away team of Paul Irvine, Phil Meadows, Allan Davies and skip David Timms won by 12 to give Sidmouth an overall victory of 38-32, setting up a place in the semi-final.
Sidmouth Blues just missed out to Honiton Lacemakers in the Ladies Triples League, 29-32, while the Yellows also suffered a reverse, 24-30 against Crediton Green.
Sidmouth BC had the pleasure of entertaining a touring team from California, USA. The company was excellent and they thoroughly enjoyed a Devon cream tea. The USA visitors proved victorious, one win for the team of Derek Mountford, Barbara Donaldson and skip Mick Cox.
Finally, on another beautiful day, we took three triples to Tiverton Borough for a friendly. A very enjoyable and close game saw Sidmouth win 45-43, and on two of the three rinks. Our top rink comprised Brian Deam, Clive Brook and skip Jerome Hagen, 18-11.
