Although it is now all about outdoor bowls, there was some final news from the indoor season.
In a league set up by top coach Allan Davis, along with Karen Hollingdale, for some 16 new members that only joined last September, held every Friday evening in a relaxed atmosphere to help the new group develop their skills. Naturally, there is a winner and this year’s was John Brennan - congratulations.
Then came the regular May Bank Holiday Ladies v Gents match. Last year, the ladies won on four of the seven rinks , but lost overall by just three shots, 106 – 103. This year, we won on two of the five rinks but ‘Disaster Darling’, we lost overall, 62 – 99.
The Ladies’ top rink was Maggie Masson, Sue Clint, Karen Hollingdale and skip Jane Painter, with a great score of 23 - 9. The other Ladies’ winning rink of Mary Meadows, Christine Ward, Marie Timms and skip Zena Johnson were having a really good game against Captain of the day David Timms and his team.
At tea, the ladies were 4 - 10 down, but after tea the men didn't score for a while before clawing their way back to go into the final end one shot up at 16 - 15. Marie had a great wood and trailed the jack to a Ladies’ wood, which then looked like a draw. However, on a measure, it was two shots to the ladies, so they won 17 - 16.
Very well done to Sidmouth Men, with the top team being Jason Quinn, Denis Griffiths, Brian Smith and skip Phil Meadows, 26 – 7.
In our very first outdoor friendly, we took four mixed rinks to our neighbours at Seaton and what a great start to the season. Sidmouth won on three of the four rinks and overall by just one shot, 64 - 63. Our top rink was Brian Deam, Christine Ward, Captain Roger Stewart and skip John Mason, 21 -15.
Sidmouth have four teams in the Mens over 60's Exeter and District Triples League and two in the LTL Ladies Triples League. Bring on the sun!
