It has been a superb couple of weeks for women's and girls' rugby at Sidmouth RFC, rounding off a landmark season for the club.
The next generation of local talent is being recognised on a national scale, with Ellie Wood representing England in the Six Nations Festival, competing against France, Wales, Italy, Ireland and Scotland.
England Coach James Cooper said: “Congratulations to all players selected. Competing in a Six Nations tournament – at any level – is a prestigious achievement that these young women should be proud of."
Sidmouth RFC are hosting a Girls' Rugby Fun Day on Sunday, May 14 and a fantastic opportunity for local youngsters to take the early steps on a path that could see them emulate Ellie’s success.
No signing up is required, just turn up at the Sidford pitches from 1pm – 3pm. Special guest coaches will be in attendance, with rugby-themed games and a barbeque to refuel.
On the senior level, the Sidmouth Valkyries have finished second in the league in their debut season in a competitive environment, a remarkable achievement for everyone involved.
Sidmouth were runners-up to an outstanding Helston Women’s side and finished above the likes of Okehampton, Paignton, Truro and Teignmouth.
The Valkyries concluded their campaign with an entertaining 41-37 home victory over Teignmouth Women and a game that ebbed and flowed.
It was also a day that demonstrated the fantastic sportsmanship involved with rugby, as Teignmouth were short of players, so the Valkyries bulked up their visitors to make it a proper game.
It worked out perfectly, as the match was fabulous fun for the spectators, and ultimately proved enough for that second-placed finish.
Congratulations to Caitlin Perry for winning the Jack in the Green Player of the Day. Perry scored a crucial last-minute try and added the conversion to complete a proud season for Sidmouth Valkyries.
The club said: “What a season for these ladies! Well done to all players, past and present and a massive thank you to the coaches, guest coaches, management team, supporters, kind sponsors and spectators.”
Well done Sidmouth RFC and enjoy the well-earned summer break.
