Sidmouth Bowls Club Captain Tony Broughton had a great turnout of players for both morning and afternoon sessions at the Indoor Men’s Captain Day for 2023.
Lots of newer members participated and there was some really good bowling and lots of banter. The winning team from the morning drive comprised Brian Deam, Steve Boyle, Peter Mison and skip Paul Irvine, with a plus score of 9 shots.
The afternoon winners, with a slightly higher plus 11 score, were Martin Jenkins, Patrick Collins, Chris Ward and skip Brian Smith. Debbie Leeds, with the help of ladies Captain Sue Turner, and Julie Wevill organised the food.
Sue Doughty and Carol Smith ran the bar, which was really busy, while Wendy Cox and Deborah Robertson were a great help with the washing up, so also thank you to them.
Next was a ladies’ home match against friends from Exmouth’s Madeira BC. There used to be many names put down for these ladies’ games, whether home or away, but now the Captains cry out for ladies to play. If not, these need to be cancelled, which is a real shame and very embarrassing for the club.
Unfortunately for Madeira, who bought with them some newer players, Sidmouth won by rather a lot, 88 - 29. The Sidmouth teams were Chris Radburn, Anita Mason and skip Carol Smith, 33 – 11, Jean Brimson, Sue Turner and skip Jill Bishop, 30 – 8, and Mary Turner, Marie Timms and skip Zena Johnson, 25 - 10.
In yet another heavy home win for Sidmouth, in a mixed game against Topsham, the overall score was a powerful 84 - 36 in favour of the hosts, also winning on all three rinks. However, it was a very friendly Sunday afternoon game, played in a very good spirit.
The Sidmouth teams were Chris Ward, Anita Mason and skip Don Smith, 39 – 8, Julie Wevill, John Mason and skip Paul Irvine, 27 -17, and Brian Deam, Debbie Leeds and skip Bert Hague, 18 -11.
Sidmouth Bowls Club is hosting a ‘Taster Day’ on Saturday, April 1, from 11am to 1pm and also 2pm to 4pm. Come along and have a go. Bowls are supplied, just bring flat soled shoes or trainers and a willingness to give it a try.
