Sidmouth Town enjoyed a clean sweep of victories on the weekend, as all three sides battled to narrow wins.
In the South-West Peninsula League, an 84th minute header from Nathan Cooper was enough to earn the Vikings all three points at Holsworthy, making it back-to-back victories in North Devon.
Luka Nickles and Scott Hughes combined nicely in the early exchanges but the final shot was way off target. Louis Jagger Cane then fired over from a great position after good play by Tom Bray.
Gradually, the Vikings began to find their range and were comfortably in control of the game, but the Holsworthy custodian was enjoying an inspired afternoon.
Sidmouth frustration grew after the break, as Nickles headed inches wide but the deadlock was finally broken with six minutes left on the clock. Nickles was fouled in a dangerous position and a delicious cross from Carey was headed into the bottom corner by a jubilant Cooper.
Sidmouth 2nds recovered from a poor start against Lyme Regis in the Devon & Exeter Premier, conceding inside the first minute.
After that, the Vikings got stuck into the game, with the Lyme ‘keeper pulling off three great saves. Just before the half-time whistle, Sidmouth scored two goals in two minutes from Frank Long and Will Jenkins, assisted by George Gelling with some great midfield play.
Sidmouth struck the woodwork after the break but were pegged back by an 80th minute leveller. There was one final twist, as Jenkins notched his second for an entertaining 3-2 victory.
Freddie Roberts hit the net and an own goal to give Sidmouth 3rds a 2-0 half-time lead at home to Colyton in Division 4 and they withstood a second-half fightback from the visitors to earn all three points.
Ottery St Mary had no answer to leaders Beer Albion in the Devon Football League. Despite a battling performance, the Otters succumbed to a 3-0 defeat, and the fixture schedule has them booked in for the reverse fixture this weekend at Washbrook Meadows.
Ottery Reserves suffered a brutal 10-0 defeat at home to leaders Alphington in the Devon & Exeter League Premier Division. The Otters travel to Elmore 2nds this weekend.
