Flounders are once again dominating the sea anglers catches this week. After the National Flounder championship on the Teign, it was the turn of Kingsbridge SAC to hold their annual Flounder competition.
Seventy-five seniors and six juniors signed on in freezing conditions. In a closely-fought competition, Matt Lavis came out on top with a fish of 3lbs 2.5oz with John Moore taking second spot with a fish just 1oz lighter at 3lbs 1.5oz. Third and fourth places were equally close, with Eric Squance taking third with 2lbs 15.5oz and Mike Pean fourth with 2lbs14.5oz. It is interesting to note that all four top places were taken with bigger fish than from the Teign the previous week.
Honiton SAC held their club Flounder competition over two different Saturdays with the winner being Richard Trim. The next big Flounder competition is this Sunday on the Teign, when Torbay and Babbacombe association of sea anglers host the RNLI competition. Sign on from 7am at Teignmouth RNLI station. This is a great competition with a host of Christmas Hampers to be won.
If anyone enjoys specimen fish then the Southwest Sea fishing league might be for you, there are only a few weeks left for entries, full details are available from Facebook.
Still on the Flounders, Jason Upham of Brixham SAC fished a pleasure session on the Teign, finding a fish of 2lbs 4.5oz and Daniel Patrick fished an undisclosed mark, finding another sizeable fish. The only other fish of note this week fell to the rod of Newton Abbot’s Chris Wagstaff, who travelled East and found a double-figured Blonde Ray.
These freezing conditions are not ideal for Carp angler but, when there is a competition, then anglers will have a go, as was shown with the latest match at Spring ponds where Elliot Fay came out on top with a weight of 21lbs 10oz, with Chris Packer in second with 19lbs and Steve Hayman third with 15lbs. The successful method being the pole baited with either maggot or pellet.
