It has been another quiet week for anglers, sea fish are difficult to find around our shores and boats have generally been unable to leave the harbours due to the windy weather.
A couple of anglers did, however, brave the conditions, including Torbay anglers Kev Madeley and Aaron Colhoun, who both saved a blank week with small conger eels. Aaron travelled to one of the Somerset reefs for his fish, whilst Kev fished more locally at Blackpool sands for his, which weighed 5 1/2lbs.
I have had several trips cancelled this year because of the winds but am looking to get out this week, firstly aboard Michael Webber-Griffiths' boat Teddie Boy from Minehead and Kim Aplin’s Boat Sambe from Beer. Hopefully, I will have something positive to report on these trips next week.
However, I did recently find a window in the weather and fished a trip cancelled several times with my brother out of Brighton aboard a superb boat, Yellowfin, skippered by Kurt Lander. We fished 25 miles out in the shipping lanes and had success finding the target species, Pollack. Nothing huge was caught but it was a generally a good day.
A private booking at Sprig Ponds, Rocombe for a competition saw the anglers fish in unfavourable wet and windy conditions. The top rod on the day was that of Guy Pedrick with a winning bag of 31lbs 8oz. Pellet and Maggot fished on the pole and feeder were the successful tactics for Carp, Roach and Perch. Pond two is now open after the stocking of small Carp and care is asked for when handling these fish. Pond one is closed on a Saturday for competitions.
Kennick reservoir is now open for the season after the recent stocking of 700 Trout, booking details for the fishing and the boats are on the South West Lakes Trust website.
