Kennick Flyfishers started their season with round one of the Snowbee Top Rod competition with 16 anglers fishing the picturesque reservoir on the edge of Dartmoor.
An average of five fish per angler was caught with an average weight of 1.7 lbs. The best fish was a beautiful Rainbow Trout caught by Ashburton angler Paul Wicks, who was also the overall winner with a total weight of 11lbs 5oz.
James Friendship and John Hern took the next two places. Successful flies on the day were Damsels, Blobs and Cats Whiskers, fished subsurface on intermediate lines. For the occasional fly fisher, this venue is fantastic value at £25 for a day. Ticket must be booked online.
Newton Abbot’s Chris Wagstaff fished Chesil beach for the Rays, his target being five different Ray species from the that mark. This time, he landed a fine Blonde Ray leaving him only a Spotted Ray on his list.
Exmouth SAC fished their Away Cup in the Bristol Channel, the best fish was a Thornback Ray falling to the rod of Nik Chandler. Nik also won the event with the next two places going to Ken Williams and Gaz Bowden. Also from Exmouth SAC, Tim Clotworthy fished a rock mark, landing both Bull Huss and Ballan wrasse.
Boat anglers are enjoying the settled weather, as Aaron Colhoun and Saleem Ali fished a private boat, with both anglers finding Bass and Pollack on the wrecks, Aaron’s largest pollack weighing in at around 15lbs.
Tom Travers from Honiton SAC Fished aboard Teddie Boy out of Minehead and found some nice early Smooothhounds, landing a superb fish of 19lbs 4oz amongst the Bull Huss and inevitable Dogfish.
Carp have started moving nicely around our fisheries and, if the warm weather continues, will soon get into spawning mode. Newbarn Angling centre regular Ian Herring fished the smaller Island Pool using match tactics and landed a lovely Bream of around 4lbs.
