The shingle beaches to the East of our region are really beginning to liven up, Wayne Hand of Honiton SAC finding both Black Bream and Undulate Rays on a session this week
Other fish reported amongst the Mackerel are Gurnards, Black Bream and an early Trigger Fish. I fished a local beach this week trying out a couple of new rods without any success but a visiting angler fishing near me landed a beautiful surprise Tub Gurnard.
Totnes lure angler Tony White has been hitting the beaches in search of Bass and has found plenty eager to take his lures, he also tried his hand with some success for Mullet in the River Dart, catching them on floating bread. Tom Stebbens and Will Booth of Brixham SAC travelled to South Wales in search of Tope from the shore and had an excellent trip, landing fish up to nearly 34lbs.
Boats anglers Alex Webb and Dave Pearcey, fishing aboard Ross Parham’s boat ‘Spot On’ out of Brixham, caught Pollack and Cod respectively. Spot On will be relocating to Plymouth for the Tuna Season, which starts shortly.
Boat anglers in Lyme Bay are now really enjoying the summer sport with more Mackerel about than in recent years, bringing in predators, such as Bass, with Tom Travers and James Trevett finding them this week.
Black bream are back and should give excellent sport until October. Undulate rays, Thornback Rays, Smoothhounds and Gurnards can also be targeted in the same area. Gordon Richard fished with Paul Millman on a private boat in Start Bay where they found Blonde Rays, Small Eyed Rays, Plaice and Turbot, with Gordon landing the best specimen a Red Gurnard of nearly 1lb 12oz.
The Wyvern Area of the Angling Trust are holding a Junior Competition on Mountbatten Breakwater Plymouth on Saturday August 6, fishing is from 10am until 2pm, under-12’s must be accompanied by an adult.
