Congratulations to Archie Sweetland of Honiton SAC and the England junior shore angling team on winning gold at the Home Internationals, this week fished on the South West Coast. A great achievement for Archie, Honiton SAC and everyone in the team, hopefully there will be more wins to come.

Unfortunately, Covid seem to have reared its head again this week with both Honiton SAC and Kennick Flyfishers reporting reduced turnouts in their competitions.

Honiton fished at Branscombe beach in East Devon on a hot still evening, not good conditions for fishing, and true to form, the fish didn’t play ball with only a few being landed. The best landed on the night was an 8lbs Bull Huss to the rod of Paul Down, other fish on the evening were just a few Mackerel and the ever-present Dogfish. Mackerel are showing all around our coast and, as always, give a good account for themselves on light tackle.

Kennick Flyfishers travelled to Clatworthy Reservoir, high in the Brendon Hill near Wiveliscombe in Somerset. The day was hot and still with few fish moving, however Nerwton Abbot’s Alan Ridell managed to catch his bag limit of five fish and won the competition. Darren Penfold and Peter Brown took the next two places. Chris Bolt had some consolation, as he won the raffle and Dennis Hones won a Wessex Water day ticket. Best flies on the day were Diawl Bachs on a floating line and Blobs on an intermediate.

Newbarn Angling Centre report that now Lily Pool has been partially cleared, a few tench have been land, although there is no sign of the two Grass Carp that are supposed to inhabit the pool. Carp are still being taken on floating baits, although they do appear dormant on very sunny days, not unlike the rest of us.

Please get your entries in for our fish of the month competition kindly sponsored by Sidewinder Lures and Newbarn Angling centre to johnsherlockfish@gmail.com for either a couple of day tickets at Newbarn or a prize pack from Sidewinder.
