Amnesty International's East Devon group is marking Write for Rights Day.

The event will involve writing messages of hope to individuals arrested or imprisoned for advocating human rights.

This year, the group will focus on Professor Şebnem Fincancı, the head of the Union of Turkish Medical Associations.

She was charged with terrorist propaganda in 2022 after speaking out against Turkey's alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.

If her appeal is unsuccessful, she faces two years in prison.

Şebnem is internationally recognised for her efforts to eradicate torture and has collaborated with the UN and the World Health Organisation.

The Turkish authorities have reportedly targeted her in recent years.

The Write for Rights event will take place on Saturday, December 7, from 2.30pm to 4pm at Twyford House, Coburg Road, Sidmouth.

The group will also commemorate International Human Rights Day by signing cards on Saturday, December 14, from 10am to noon at the Methodist Church Foyer.

Across the past year, the East Devon Amnesty group has backed several Turkish human rights defenders, including the Saturday Mothers, who have been holding silent protests since 1995 in search of information about their missing relatives.

The group invites everyone to join their regular meetings at Twyford House at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of each month, except August and December.

Amnesty International's Write for Rights Day hopes to make a meaningful impact, with a simple letter having the potential to change lives.
