A renowned cellist is set to perform in a music series recital.

Maxim Calver, a BBC Young Musician Grand Finalist in 2018, is set to perform at Sidmouth Parish Church on Saturday, November 9, at 3pm.

He will be accompanied by pianist Kumi Matsuo.

The concert is part of the Sidmouth Music series, known for its high-quality performances.

Maxim Calver, praised by Strad Magazine for the "elegance of his technique, overall sound and natural poeticism", is in high demand as a soloist with major European orchestras.

Kumi Matsuo, who gained her master's degree at the Royal College of Music, is the winner of several competition awards, including the Louisiana International Piano Competition in 2013.

The recital will begin with Beethoven’s Cello Sonata no 4, a late work noted for its rich musical thought and texture.

The recital will continue with Brahms' first published cello sonata, dedicated to Josef Gänsbacher, a composer Brahms became familiar with in Vienna.

The sonata is celebrated for its lush, endless melodies.

After the interval, Debussy’s only cello sonata will be performed.

Though short, it is one of Debussy’s most enigmatic works, written in 1915.

The finale of the recital is Mendelssohn’s Sonata no 2 for cello and piano, written in 1843.

This piece is considered significant in the emergence of the cello as a solo instrument.

Its adagio third movement, known for its luxuriant melodies, is reminiscent, for music scholars, of Bach’s chorale works.

Tickets for the recital are priced at £18 and are available online at www.sidmouthmusic.org.uk, through Paragon Books in Sidmouth High Street, or at the door.

The concert organisers have provided a phone number for any enquiries about the season of concerts: 01395 597454.

The Sidmouth Music series concerts, held in the parish church, consistently feature high-quality performances by well-known artists.

The upcoming performance by Maxim Calver and Kumi Matsuo is expected to continue this tradition.
