Ottery author is set to release a historical novel inspired by the Tudor era.

John Edmund Hall, of Ottery St Mary, will launch his latest book, Murky Waters: A Tudor Tale in the Otter Vale, on Saturday, November 2.

The event will take place at the Curious Otter Bookshop, Mill Street, Ottery.

Hall's new book features a gripping narrative that blends the history of Henry VIII's era with the lives of ordinary people living in the River Otter Valley during the 1540s.

The book explores themes of religion, faith, power, class, greed, and relationships.

Hall’s interest in Ottery’s parish church led him to research more about the area, which eventually became the backdrop for his book.

He says that the story of what happened here and in the Otter Vale in the 1540s just got more and more enthralling.

Hall wanted to highlight the impact of the dissolution in 1545 on local life.

He also brings to life the experiences of historical figures such as John and Joan Haydon of Cadhay House.

Four years after the dissolution, the Otter Vale was on the verge of a civil war known as the Western Rising or Commotion Time.

Hall's book attempts to recover these lost aspects of history.

The novel begins with the character Thomas Tylsum, a librarian who witnessed the dissolution of nearby Dunkeswell Abbey.

He is later taken to work at the chained library in Ottery, where he foresees the destruction heading Ottery’s way.

The book describes the subsequent desperate actions, the spoils to be had, and the risks to be taken, drawing readers into a world of historical intrigue.

John Hall, known for his love of travel, has used his diverse cultural encounters to enrich his creative writing.

His previous works include Flashbacks, Istanbul, Harry's Awakening, Domain, Deactivation, and Harry's England.
