Organisers of a new Community Speedwatch Scheme in Newton Poppleford are calling for volunteers to join their team.

A team of ten volunteers have already been monitoring vehicle speeds through Newton Poppleford for just over two years but with more volunteers, we could do more roadside sessions and have a much bigger impact.

The purpose of a Community Speedwatch Team is to remind drivers to stick to the 30mph speed limit. It has been running for the past two years and volunteers say that most vehicles (in both directions) do usually slow down when they see them on the roadside.

When a vehicle does speed past them, their details are noted and passed onto the police who then send a formal letter to the vehicle owner.

Police Officers also come along for a few sessions, and they help the police with Road Safety operations on the A3052.

A spokesman for the scheme said: "Are you worried about the speed of traffic through the village, worried about the safety of friends and family?

"Well there is something you can do to actively help; you could join the village Community Speedwatch Team."

A team is also deployed at Colaton Raleigh at the same time so that drivers get a double reminder to slow down.

Volunteering with the team is very flexible as there’s no fixed rota. Instead every volunteer gets to choose how many sessions they’d like to do each month and they also choose the days and the times of day which suits them.
