Ottery St Mary Parish Church has received a 'significant' donation for its Shine a Light project, which aims to equip the church for the next generation.

The lighting, wiring, and audiovisual project will make it far more accessible than in the past 1500 years to participate in events—worship, community events, concerts, and meetings—and open up the church to more of the community. As the prime draw of tourists to the town, it will enhance visitors' experience.

The church has held fundraising events in the last six months which include concerts, dinners, tower tours, carving exhibitions, family fun days, quiz nights, and cream teas. The vicar, Rev Lydia Cook, even sang the entire hymnbook.

As a result, including church funds and grants already received, the church has reached £365,000 on its climb towards the £500,000 needed. There will be lots more until the work starts in July next year—hopefully, something that will welcome everyone.

Residents can donate, or get sponsored to do something, by emailing churchoffice@otterystmary.org.uk. On October 13, card readers are being installed in the church or or visit Give a Little website.
