A Sidmouth man is set to take part in the world's largest half marathon this weekend.

Ken, a member of Sidmouth u3a, will be one of four members of the u3a movement taking part in the Great North Run on September 8.

The run stretches from Newcastle upon Tyne to South Shields.

Ken, who has lived in the North East and run the Great North Run several times, is excited to take part again, especially as it will mark the 30th anniversary of his u3a.

He said: "It’s exciting being able to run the Great North Run again – I don’t know how many more runs I have in me.

"Running over the Tyne Bridge, that is the most iconic bridge.

"Normally the Red Arrows are going over at the same time… you get quite emotional.

"It’s an amazing feeling, the whole race."

Ken joined Sidmouth u3a five years ago and has enjoyed the many activities and experiences on offer.

The four u3a members taking part in the Great North Run are also raising money for the u3a movement.

The u3a movement has more than 400,000 members across the UK, encouraging people with more free time to come together and learn new skills or explore new interests.

Ken is looking forward to the challenge, as are fellow members Joyce, Ashley and Stephen.

Joyce, a member of Newcastle u3a, has the advantage of living close to the start line of the Great North Run.

She said: "In running for u3a, hopefully, we can raise people's awareness of what is on offer and show how you can pursue your interests, old and new, whatever your age."

Ashley joined his u3a in 2023 and quickly became involved in several sports groups, including badminton, racket ball and table tennis.

He then started a u3a running group.

Ashley said that u3a means a lot to him as his parents also had a good experience with it.

He said that he would be doing the Great North Run in memory of his parents.

Stephen joined Southport u3a in 2016 after moving to the area.

He said: "As a single retiree; I needed to get out and meet new people.

"By running this race and fundraising I can give a little something back and say thank you u3a for enriching my life."
