Vulnerable refugee babies in Mauritania are being kept warm by cosy cardigans and hats, knitted by a lady in Sidmouth.
Jo Deremer has been supplying the knitwear via her nephew Colin Wells, who was until this month the British Ambassador in Mauritania.
Colin said: "She is a fanatic knitter and concentrates on adorable and colourful cardigans and hats for small babies. It is a hobby and she is good at it.
"She asked me to find a good home for them amongst the most vulnerable in Mauritania. UNHCR (The UN’s refugee agency) and the Catholic church in Nouadhibou in northern Mauritania made sure they were given to refugee children, babies more specifically.
"They are well received because while Mauritania is hot in the day, the temperatures drop significantly at night. Many refugees do not have adequate accommodation. It is a rough existence and children are the most vulnerable."
