The Bhangra Dance workshop with Avtar Indian Dance held at All Saints Church Hall on Saturday, August 3 was met with a delighted reception by participants.

Bhangra is a cultural dance from the Punjab region of India. It's traditionally danced to celebrate the Harvest Festival, but nowadays it's danced at any celebration, sometimes featuring music used in Bollywood films.

The session covered both traditional and modern Bhangra dances. Workshop leader Avtar Panesar said: "I teach a range of steps and movements and encourage dancers to have fun and express themselves. I believe everyone can dance, regardless of background, age or ability. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for dance and creating an atmosphere for people to dance both individually and collectively, which is fun and inclusive."

Participant Yasmine Haworth from Colyford said: "I enjoyed learning different moves and there was an uplifting atmosphere within the group. I'd love to take more workshops in Indian dance."

Another participant said: "Avtar has a great sense of humour and made everyone feel relaxed and unselfconscious. He encourages people to trust their body and follow the music. The workshop was just fabulous!"
