A Sidmouth resident has written a book about Lanzarote's geology, now available in English.

Retired university professor Roger Trend's 190-page paperback, entitled The Island of Volcanoes, was initially published in Lanzarote in December.

Presenting a rich collection of 15 maps and diagrams, and more than 140 photographs, the book is pitched at non-specialists, including travellers.

The book arose from the explanations that Mr Trend gave to fellow hotel guests during stays in Lanzarote.

He discovered that no book was available for non-specialists who wanted to discover more about the island's amazing landscapes and geological background, so decided to write the book himself.

Mr Trend's book delves into the island's geology and landscape, outlining the formation of the Canary Islands and the several phases of Lanzarote's volcanism, as well as its diverse sediments and hazards.

A section entitled Living with Volcanoes discusses topics ranging from water supply and hydrocarbon deposits to vine growing and the global geopark.

The work of professional photographers Rubén Acosta and Christian Hansen features in the book, while the foreword is penned by esteemed volcanologists Juan Carlos Carracedo and Valentín R Troll, both Earth Science Fellows of the Royal Academy of Sciences of the Canary Islands.

Mr Trend, a retired academic from Oxford University, also spent part of his career at the University of Exeter.

After retiring, he and his wife moved to Sidmouth in 2011.

Bob Symes, curator of Sidmouth Museum, approached Mr Trend about involvement in the museum's activities.

Mr Trend led geology walks and wrote three booklets for the museum, about Sidmouth's rocks, river, and coast.

With daughter Emma, he developed a special geology walk called Singing the Sidmouth Rocks (Sidrocks for short), to show Sidmouth Museum's support for the Folk Festival.

Those songs were published as a museum booklet, the Sidrocks Songbook.

Mr Trend also established the geology elements of the Sidmouth Science Festival when the festival began 12 years ago.

A talk about the new book will be given by Mr Trend at the Sidmouth Science Festival on Saturday, October 5 at 1pm, in All Saints Church, Sidmouth, to which all are welcome.
