In February, twelve members of Sidmouth Photographic Club made a three-day trip to Birmingham - a destination that offers a wealth of opportunities for photographers across all genres.

On day one, the group were wowed by the murals and graffiti of the gritty Digbeth quarter, where colour and creative expression bring urban cool to Brum’s city landscape. Architecture lovers were lured to the city centre by the iconic curves and silver discs of the Selfridges building and filigree exterior of  Birmingham Library, while for fans of street photography, busy streets, markets and New Street station offered up candid shots of interesting human interactions.

The trip was meticulously crafted by club Secretary Mike Hawkridge and he had this to say in summing up the visit: “Birmingham is the perfect location for creatives, with many unique spots to excite both beginners and experienced photographers.

"For our group, besides the chance to do some serious city photography in all its genres, it was a great social event too; we all met up for breakfast each morning, lunches, evening meals, countless coffees and plenty of cake; lots of time for chatting and getting to know fellow club members!

"Back in Sidmouth, we reconvened a few weeks later to show our images, and as the organiser it was very satisfying to see so many great pictures from all the participants.

"There is always a lot of work required to plan a trip like this, to research photographic locations, work out walking routes, transport and timings and to find some nice places to eat. It’s therefore a relief when everything goes according to plan and everyone has a great time.

"Our next big trip is to London in August – just for the day this time. Another chance for some exploring and bonding!”
