The deadline's fast approaching in a consultation on proposals that could see development in the 'green wedge' between Sidford and Sidbury.
East Devon District Council is inviting responses by 5pm this Thursday (June 27) to proposed revisions to the 'green wedges' currently protected from development in its existing Local Plan.
The council is in the process of drawing up a new Local Plan to guide development across the district up to 2040.
Green wedges are intended to make sure that green space between settlements is retained. But a report by EDDC states that: "The locations and boundaries of these areas are currently under review to take account of development and other changes which have occurred since the boundaries were defined in the adopted Local Plan'. It goes on to say that 'the number and extent of green wedges may change following the review'.
There is concern that pressure to allocate land for new housing and employment sites may lead East Devon District Council (EDDC) to alter its Local Plan in a way that would allow development on some of these 'green wedge' sites. The council has said: "A few minor changes to the green wedges are proposed in the consultation, acknowledging that some development may need to be accommodated in these areas to meet housing needs."
A Sidmouth resident who contacted the Herald said: "Having spoken with some neighbours, including farmers, we're really concerned that EDDC are considering building on green fields between Sidford and Sidbury. I think EDDC needs to address resolving current issues relating to pressures on public services before potentially creating more issues."
She is urging local people to take a look at the Green Wedges consultation page on the EDDC website, where there is a chance to give their views on the Green Wedge policy and comment on each of 12 separate Green Wedge sites - including the one between Sidford and Sidbury.
