A way to stay fit and reduce stress without physical strain has found several enthusiasts in Sidmouth.
Seated yoga includes a range of adapted yoga stretches and poses which are done sitting down, or using a chair for support when standing.
Alison, a long-term yoga enthusiast, said: "I started to do seated yoga after many years of standing yoga as I had a long-term knee injury.
"I was surprised to be able to do so much sitting down and I am even able to do some of my favourite standing poses with the support of a chair.
"It has helped me to stay supple and ease stiffness in my body.
"I would highly recommend it."
Seated yoga classes in Sidmouth are run by Iyengar yoga teacher Barbara Vidion.
The classes offer a comprehensive process of stretching and relaxation.
Ms Vidion said: "The classes give you the opportunity to get a really good stretch, finishing with mindful relaxation.
"The class on Tuesday mornings, in Primley Road, is entirely seated so is ideal for people who don’t want to stand.
"On Thursdays, in Stowford Community centre, there’s a mix of standing and seated work.
"Everyone is very welcome."
Several students praise the advantages of seated yoga classes.
Pam, an attendee of the Tuesday classes, has found seated yoga extremely beneficial in managing her recurring pain.
She said: "Since regularly stretching my spine in seated yoga, my sciatica has thankfully not returned.
"It is a lovely calm and relaxing class."
Similarly, other attendees Jill and Margaret have found it particularly useful in recovery from severe back issues, and in improving balance and energy levels, respectively.
Ms Vidion's classes feature people of all ages, with many coming for years.
Andy, who has been a regular attendee, said: I thoroughly recommend this to people regardless of mobility issues as it offers an oasis of calm and an opportunity to reset both body and mind through a series of exercises and breathing techniques.
"I invariably feel both energised and relaxed at the end of each session."
It appears that seated yoga provides an inclusive fitness solution to many in Sidmouth.
