Concerned residents of Salcombe Hill Road in Sidmouth are campaigning for a lower speed limit to be introduced, as they fear for the safety of pedestrians.
They want the limit reduced from 30mph to 20mph and have formed a Community Speed Watch group to provide evidence of the need for change. They say speed monitoring sessions have proved that many motorists are going faster than 30mph.
One of the group, David Barlow, said: "Residents and parking visitors all walk into town, but there are no pavements and the road is quite narrow in places, so pedestrians are very vulnerable to fast-moving traffic. There is a lot of through traffic on the road and it is used as a shortcut up to the A3052.
"Because of the road restrictions and fast traffic there have been some near misses, and a pedestrian has a five times better chance of surviving a collision at 20mph than 30mph."
On Friday, June 7, the group were joined by Simon Jupp, the Conservative general election candidate for the Honiton & Sidmouth constituency, for their latest speed monitoring session.
David said: "He has offered to help move our case forward and it was just great to have him with us at our community speed watch session on Friday 7th June. Simon is absolutely committed to working with residents and Devon County Council to get the speed reduction in place at the earliest opportunity."
The other candidates standing for election in the Honiton & Sidmouth constituency are: Jake Bonetta - Labour, Vanessa Coxon - Independent, Hazel Exon - Party of Women, Richard Foord -Liberal Democrats, Henry Gent- Green Party and Paul Quickenden - Reform UK.
