Anne Phelps (previous Anne Fenton-Jones) died peacefully at home on May 18, 2024, just two days after her 92nd birthday.

Anne moved to Sidmouth in 1968 to take up the post of district nurse and midwife for the Sidmouth area.

She worked in this role until 1982 when, for the next six years, she took the post of nurse manager at Sidmouth Hospital.

In 1988 she semi-retired and worked as a Practice Nurse until she fully retired in 1993; an impressive 45-year nursing career, having started her training in 1948.

Sidmouth Herald: Anne PhelpsAnne was very active in the local community. she was a committed Christian and member of All Saints Church,  where she was Church Warden for nine years and served the church community in many ways. Anne married John Phelps at All Saints Church in 1995 and they had 12-and-a-half years married until John’s death in 2008.

Anne and John entered their garden in Ashley Crescent into the Sidmouth ‘Britian in Bloom’ competition and from July 1997 until 2003 they consistently won first prize in the Small Garden and Patio categories.

Sidmouth Herald: Anne PhelpsAnne was a well-known and loved figure in Sidmouth town: one couldn’t walk down the High Street with her without being stopped several times by people she had nursed, delivered their babies or helped through the church.

A service of thanksgiving for Anne’s life will be held at All Saints Church on June 19 at Midday. All are welcome to attend to remember and celebrate Anne’s remarkable life and legacy.
