Maria McCarthy reviews the Jazz Vs Drum Masterclass.
Ian Matthews is one of the most influential drummers in the UK. He has been a member of the British rock band Kasabian for 20 years and his music has been informed by both rock and jazz. This was the theme of the workshop, Drum Masterclass, Rock vs Jazz held as part of the Sidmouth International Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday 25th May 2024 at Sidmouth Parish Church.
Ian said, “I love the free, fluid nature of jazz and also the power and drama of rock. I explored this in my workshop, and played some tunes. I encouraged the participants to explore the different influences in their own music.”
David Jefferies from Axminster plays the saxophone and said, “Ian is a huge musical talent, yet very relatable. Regardless of what instrument people play, his insights can help everyone develop their musical style.”
Catharine Green of Exmouth said, “Ian is a skilful, captivating drummer. I really enjoyed the way he shared his passion and enthusiasm for drumming.”
Ian said, “This is my third time at the Sidmouth International Jazz and Blues Festival. I love the Festival and Sidmouth. It's a beautiful place which always offers a warm welcome.”
