Legendary Blues Harmonica player Johnny Mars shared his skills and experiences at a free workshop at Sidmouth Methodist Church on Saturday 25th May 2024.
The workshop was part of the Education Programme at Sidmouth International Jazz and Blues Festival. Johnny taught participants a range of skills, including breathing techniques and getting a clear tone.
They had the opportunity to play along with Johnny as he sang and played his own harmonica, and he asked for a couple of volunteers to join him on stage.
Following the workshop Johnny said: "Teaching the Blues is a great experience. I'm enjoying the Festival and think Sidmouth is beautiful. I'd love to come here again.''
Workshop participant Lisa McCarthy from Plymouth said, “Coming to see Johnny was my top priority at the Festival. His talent is phenomenal and he's played with so many legends. Playing on stage with Johnny was a memorable and inspiring experience. I felt very nervous at first, but then I got into the zone.”
Fellow participant Freddie Blu added, “Johnny's teaching style is so uplifting. I've only been learning the harmonica for a few weeks, and I found his guidance today very motivating.”
