Guided Wildflower Walk at Arlington Court
7, 14, 21 and 28 Jun. 11am-12pm
Each Friday a member of the grasslands project team will be leading this half mile walk and talk around the pleasure grounds, sharing information about the wildflowers sown here and currently blooming, the projects aims and the work taking place across north Devon to restore wildflower meadows.

Wildflower trail at Arlington Court

Journey around the pleasure grounds to find 8 giant wildflowers on this family friendly trail. Learn about the wildflowers that have been sown at Arlington, as part of the North Devon grasslands project, and find about the importance of pollinators. Or head into the house to discover Rosalie Chichester, Arlington Court's last resident, wildflower illustrations from over 100 years ago.

Rosalie Chichester's wildflower watercolours

Visit the house to see Rosalie Chichester's wildflower watercolour paintings on display. Running alongside the wildflower family trail this display in the house reflects on the past, present and future of wildflowers at Arlington Court.
View Rosalie's original paintings in the museum room, with four of her albums on display. Along with handcrafted pop-up books creating using copies of Rosalie's paintings. These three book beautiful depict Arlington's wildflower past, present and future vision. Bringing to life the work carried out by the North Devon Grasslands Project.

Outdoor history tour

During this free guided walking tour you will explore the pleasure grounds and formal gardens with volunteer Graham, learning about the history of the estate. From the location of the old 18th-century house to the medieval village there is plenty to discover on this tour.

Paper boats – stories that have sailed

An interactive exhibition bringing Rosalie’s travels to life through her photography, writings and paintings. Find 3D animals around the house, make an origami paper boat, discover foods of the world or learn about the shell collection and have a go at arranging a display.

Manor Mill open afternoons
Every Wed and Sun from 28 Jul. 1-4pm
Visitors to Manor Mill will be able to see the waterwheel turning on the outside of the building, as well as the vast wheels and cogs of the interior performing their work. As the machinery turns, the air is filled with the sounds and judders of a bygone age, and the history of the building comes to life before your eyes.
Manor Mill is in the centre of Branscombe village, on Mill Lane (postcode EX12 3DS). Limited parking is available at the National Trust carpark, by the Old Forge. More parking is available next door at Branscombe Village Hall car park (donations welcome).

Buckland Abbey

Tudor Cooking

As you reach the ground floor of Buckland Abbey, you may smell an open fire and something cooking! Our Tudor cooking team, in full costume, will be whipping up a spread fit for a Tudor household. Their menu will be tailored to the time of year and may reflect events in the Tudor social or religious calendar. This regular event is a living history display that brings the Abbey to life. The food will not be available for visitors to eat but we will provide recipe cards for you to take away and try at home. Visitors may be able to assist with some simple tasks such as grinding spices.

Guided Garden Tour
Sat 8 and Sun 9 Jun. 2 – 3pm
What better way is there to explore a garden? One of the members of the garden team will meet you by the Great Barn and take you on a tour of the garden, offering their knowledge of the plants and history of the gardens. This is aimed at anyone with an interest in gardens, you don’t need to have a good knowledge of plants as the gardeners will be happy to answer any questions you have. This gentle stroll around different areas of the garden, its history and its planting will offer any visitor a deeper insight into the Abbey gardens.

Medieval Weekend
Sat 15 June and Sun 16 June. 10am-4pm
Step back in time and learn about medieval lives at Buckland Abbey with archers, costumed characters and traders taking over the Abbey.
A living history camp will be set up outside the Great Barn with demonstrations of historical crafts and medieval trades including cooking. Authentic methods and tools will be used, and visitors will be encouraged to ask questions and learn about the lives of these medieval traders. There will also be archery demonstrations on the Abbey lawn and a fashion display in the Barn.

Willow Weaving: Sustainable bird feeders and winged creatures!
Fri 12 Jul. 10am – 1pm
Learn how to create your very own sustainable bird feeders and winged creatures to hang in the garden or home using natural materials. This event is perfect for nature lovers, bird watchers and craft enthusiasts alike. Come connect with nature and get creative in this 3 hour workshop.
Suitable for complete beginners but please note that willow can be fiddly and so not recommended for those under 14 years or people who suffer from severe joint pain. That being said we have regular breaks and time for tea/nibbles.

Exon Singers
Fri 26 Jul 1pm – 2pm
Music from the Renaissance to Radiohead in The Great Barn. A striking lunchtime recital programme featuring Gregorian chant and a modern work inspired by the same chant, a great hymn of praise from the Renaissance, contemporary pieces with captivating harmonies, and ending with a serene choral arrangement of Radiohead’s Pyramid Song. Visitors and concert goers alike will be welcome to wander around the Great Barn as we perform this 50-minute informal recital.

The History of the Abbey through its Art (guided tour)
Most Mondays. 2 – 3.30pm
Our volunteer guide will take you around the Abbey, giving you an in-depth tour of the pieces on display and weaving the stories of the paintings into the history of the Buckland. The tour will be scheduled for most Mondays but please check this event or our website to see if it is running on the Monday you are hoping to visit on.

Medieval Buckland (guided tour)

Uncover the monastic past at Buckland as you take a walk with our volunteer Brian. You will discover fascinating architecture at every turn and understand better the story of Buckland Abbey before the dissolution of the monasteries.

Mossy carpet
Daily 8 to 16 Jun. 11am-3pm
Thousands of individually made pom-poms and textile tufts adorn fleecy felt from Dartmoor, creating a vibrant beautiful mossy carpet. Each moss-like pompom celebrates someone’s small attempt to make the world better for all of life. The Castle Drogo team will be helping make a section of the Mossy carpet from Saturday 8 to Sunday 16 June as part of Great Big Green Week. The activity hut will be open on these days for visitors to come and add their own moss creations (wool is supplied but donations would be more than welcome). This is a free drop in event for anyone who wishes to be part of a creative conversation for the planet.

Every Thursday throughout the school holidays, we'll be in the activity hut building sailing boats out of twigs. Then race your boat across our course and add your time to our daily score board.

Nursery Corridor Exhibition
Every Mon, Wed and Thu. 10.30am-4.30pm
The Nursery Corridor Exhibition features additional collection items and areas supplementary to the core route around the castle. The displays include objects and stories about Mary Drewe, including her dolls house, as well as Drewe family toys, musical instruments and outdoor pursuits.
The Nursery Corridor will be open whenever possible dependent on volunteer numbers, however, we can guarantee it will be open on the dates listed on the website.

Waggy Walks

Join Nathan from the National Trust Dogs on Dartmoor project for a sociable dog walk in the Teign Valley (starting at Steps Bridge Car Park). Chat to one of our rangers and find out more about the area and get to know new people while your dog enjoys the sights and sniffs. There will be time for off lead play, but there will be times that a lead is required so please bring one along with you.

'Playing by the rules: Childhood, dress and imagination' will delve into the world of children's clothing within the Killerton collection, many of them part of the Margaret Bodley collection which was acquired by the National Trust in the early 1980s. Five local Brownie and Guide units have worked with us to create future fashion designs, along with becoming young curators for one of the displays.

Join us at Saltram a few hours later than usual to enjoy those sunny summer evenings in the beautiful surroundings of Saltram’s garden. Grab a picnic blanket and some friends and enjoy late night sessions on the lawn every Friday evening over the summer. Whether it’s an after work peaceful wind down or a chance to play in the sun for a little longer before bedtime, it’s a wonderful opportunity to enjoy Saltram’s beautiful blooms and tranquil lawns for a little longer this summer.

Volunteer Voice: exhibition and activities

During volunteer voice week we will have an exhibition in our historic stable yard which will focus on the stories and achievements of our wonderful volunteer team both at Saltram and Plym Bridge.
Join us on Saturday 1st June between 10am-2pm for some one-off volunteering the whole family can enjoy. Complete 3 types of 2-minute volunteering activities across the parkland, such as litter picking, butterfly spotting and tree identification to earn a special Junior Urban Ranger badge.
Feeling crafty? Head to stable 6 on Saturday 1st June and join us for lots of paint and colouring fun to create your own butterfly pictures to take home.

Creative Saltram

The East wing and first floor rooms of the house will reopen with a spotlight on Angelica Kauffman and her inspirations from music, classical themes, and Old Master drawings. Saltram is home to 11 Kauffman paintings, which this year (until 7 July) will include Kauffman’s portrait of Theresa Parker (1773) being displayed for the very first time, this piece has been loaned from a private collection and will hang in place of Kauffman’s portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds, whilst it is being exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art in London. Also on display are the drawings, prints and books that inspired Kauffman's works and her creativity, as well as a closer look at the items within Saltram's collection that would have influenced the artists classical style

Meadow Creation at Woolacombe Down

This national meadows day, come along and help us to create new wildflower meadows. We’ll be hand-gathering yellow rattle seed, then preparing a field and spreading the collected seed in the afternoon. Yellow rattle is fantastic for kick-starting meadow creation, and this will help with the North Devon grasslands project, creating 1200ha of wildflower meadows. Across North Devon since 2022, 90 hectares of species rich grasslands have been created by our ranger teams to provide a source of wildflower seed to support further creation of habitats for nature.
