Sidmouth will be joining the national commemorations of D-Day on Thursday, June 6.

It will be the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings on June 6 1944 – the largest seaborne invasion in history and the most significant event of WWII. It ultimately tipped the course of the war in the Allies’ favour, and began the liberation of France and western Europe from Nazi occupation.

Across the UK on June 6 this year, church bells will be rung at 6.30pm and beacons will be lit at 9.15pm.

Sidmouth Town Council has organised a special event in conjunction with armed forces veterans.

Former and current serving members of the armed forces, civic representatives and local youth groups such as Brownies, Guides, Scouts, Cubs and cadets will gather on the seafront at 8pm near the Royal York & Faulkner Hotel.

Sidmouth Town Band will play and at 9.15 a beacon will be lit at York Steps off the Esplanade.

Everyone is welcome to join the seafront gathering and pay tribute to those who fought so bravely, including the thousands who risked or sacrificed their lives for freedom and peace.
