More on-call firefighters are needed to join the crew in Ottery St Mary.

Potential recruits must live or work within easy reach of the fire station on Canaan Way and be able to respond to a call-out at a moment's notice.

There are currently 10 on-call crew members, but more are needed to make sure the appliance can be mobilised at any time.

A spokesperson for Ottery Fire Station said: "Being on call runs parallel to your current work and home life. When you are on call you will need to be able to drop what you’re doing and respond to the station to attend a fire call. You will carry a pocket alerter that will alert you to incidents and will need to get to station and be ready to turn out in the fire engine within five minutes.

"Many of our crew respond from their place of work at various businesses in Ottery and also respond from home in the evenings and weekends."

Firefighters have to deal with a wide range of emergencies, so they receive training to cover all eventualities. This includes life-saving first aid, blue-light driving, rope rescue, water rescue, animal rescue, working at heights, chemical/electricity safety and dealing with hazardous materials, as well as putting out fires.

On-call firefighters are paid for their availability as well as their call-outs to incidents, along with drill nights and training courses. There is flexibility in the number of hours they commit to this availability.

Applicants must be aged over 18.

For more information come along to one of Ottery Fire Station's drill nights, Mondays at 7.30pm, or visit https://www.dsfire.gov.uk/careers/on-call-firefighters
