Local residents will have their favourites, but we’ve taken a look at the venues that are recommended particularly highly to visitors by Tripadvisor, based on the reviews submitted to the site.
Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice rating recognises businesses that earn consistently great reviews. The award-winners are among the top 10 per cent of listings on the site.
Here are some of the cafes that achieved Tripadvisor’s Travellers Choice badge in 2023 – all of which have been reviewed in the last few months.
Five stars:
Someday Something: 14 Church Street. Rated ‘excellent’ in 220 of 253 reviews. Customers rave about its cream teas, in particular the homemade scones, the Frittata of the Day and the ‘friendly, super-quick service’.
The Courtyard, 128 High Street, 216 ‘excellent’ ratings out of 235. Plenty of praise for its Sunday roasts and its breakfasts, and for its vegetarian and vegan options. ‘Prompt and pleasant service in a friendly atmosphere’.
4.5 stars:
The Cornish Bakery, 15 High Street. Rated excellent by 379 out of 544 reviews. Customers love its fresh pasties and pastries, and the quality of its coffee. Staff described as friendly and chatty.
Beckett’s, 16 High Street. Rated excellent by 283 of 407 reviews. Recommended for its crab sandwiches and other light lunch items. Many customers were impressed by its wide range of gluten-free options.
Milsons Point Café, 6 High Street, 137 ‘excellent’ reviews out of 163. Customers praise the high quality of the food; one said it was the ‘best breakfast in town’.
Another Travellers’ Choice award-winner is Taste of Sidmouth, Market Place, which gets outstanding ratings for the quality and flavour range of its ice creams, including vegan options. Rated ‘excellent’ 461 times in 614 reviews.
And not forgetting the Mustard Seed, 1 All Saints Road, voted the Sidmouth Herald’s Café of the Year 2023 by readers. Only 35 reviews on Tripadvisor but most are very enthusiastic, praising the home-made cakes and light lunches. One reviewer said ‘only a small place but full of kindness’.
