The first Sidmouth Music concert of the New Year features South Korean-British pianist Victor Lim, and is on Saturday, January 20 in the Parish Church at 3pm.

Victor is described as 'one of the most creative musicians of his generation'. He was a category finalist in BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012 and is a versatile soloist and chamber musician, as well as holding senior roles in piano tuition. He has a tireless curiosity for all genres of music, and has received awards from the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe. His particular passion is for the music of Schumann.

In this recital, he will open with a Schubert Impromptu. Schubert’s two sets of Impromptus would have been pieces the composer would play to admirers at his musical soirées. They have now become amongst the most famous and well-loved of his compositions. We shall hear the third of the second set, opus 142/3, in B flat major. It is a theme with five variations, and Schubert had particularly fondness for its melody.

The second piece is a short but atmospheric piece entitled ‘By the Still Waters’, inspired by the 23rd Psalm and written around the end of the 19th Century by American composer Amy Beach. It is said to radiate peace and unworried calm.

The first half closes on Debussy’s Suite Bergamasque. Debussy composed as music was shifting away from the Romantic music of the 19th century into Impressionism, already changing the style of painting. The suite has become famous for the magical impressionism of its fourth movement known to most people as 'Clair de Lune'.

The single work of the second half is from Robert Schumann. ‘Kreisleriana’ is a depiction of Johannes Kreisler, the composer character from the works of Hoffmann. The set of pieces portrays the contrasting aspects and emotions of the character, and is counted as one of Schumann’s finest compositions.
