There was an unexpected treat for animal lovers on Sidmouth beach when three rescued seals were seen being released back into the wild on Sunday, January 7.
The seals had been recovered in Cornwall by British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR), which goes to the aid of seals and other marine wildlife when they are injured or in difficulty. They had been taken to a wildlife rescue centre in Hastings, as all the seal rescue organisations in the South West were full. But once they were well enough to return to the wild, they were driven to Sidmouth so that they could be released nearer to their home populations.
The arrival of the BDMLR team on Sidmouth beach with the seals in crates attracted a lot of attention, and a patrolling officer from East Devon Rural Police stepped in to help keep people at a safe distance as the seals were returned to their natural habitat. According to onlookers, one 'zoomed off towards Jacob's Ladder', while the other two stayed together.
Anyone who sees a seal in difficulty on a local beach can call the BDMLR’s rescue line on 01825 765546.
