Coleridge Bridge in Ottery St Mary is closed after a tree came down, falling across the structure.
Devon County Council Highways said the footbridge across the river will remain closed 'for the foreseeable future' while inspections and repairs are carried out.
The tree came down earlier today (Thursday, December 7).
Ottery Town Council said the bridge has been shut off by East Devon District Council as it is impassable.
The King's School, whose students use the bridge, was informed about the problem before closing time.
The council said the tree is on land is owned by the Environment Agency, who are aware of the problem.
The fallen tree will have to be removed before the damage to the bridge structure can be assessed.
