Ottery St Mary's Festive Cheer event will take place next Friday, November 24, with late-night shopping, entertainment and the switching-on of the Christmas lights.
It starts at 4pm with a traction engine in the town square. The La La Choir will sing in front of the church at 5.45pm, followed by a torchlight procession to the council offices at 6.15pm.
The lights will be switched on by the Carnival Royalty at about 6.30pm with dancing by the Jo Wilson Dance Group. From 6.45pm the Ottery St Mary Silver Band will play Christmas tunes.
There will be a Christmas Market in the church grounds and in the library, and the church will be open for visitors to see the Christmas Tree Festival.
Several businesses including Devon Eco Boutique, the Georgian House and the Curious Otter are laying on special offers. Abbotts will have a free Santa's Grotto for children, with drinks and nibbles for adults. Roberts will offer a lucky dip of discounts and Rabbit & Co will have a prize draw to win a cheese hamper.
Gilbert Stephens Solicitors, Coleridge Pre School, Redferns, Ottery Travel and The Sewing Room will be open late and all plan to offer drinks and nibbles to their customers.
A Christmas Jumper competition will be running from November 20 until December 20. This involves visiting sixteen shops in Ottery and finding one of the 16 letters of a word - the letters will be displayed on a Christmas jumper in the shop window or on display. By finding all 16 letters and solving the anagram, there is the chance to win a £20 voucher for the Curious Otter bookshop.
The Ottery Museum will have a children’s quiz with candy cane mice prizes and Hospiscare has a Christmas gift bazaar and a soft toy tombola.
Finally, the Ottery Larder will also be having an Open Evening for people to meet the team and talk about their work.
