Plans to redevelop the Knowle in Sidmouth into a care home and retirement accommodation are on hold after a major fire left the building a burnt-out wreck.
The derelict building, former East Devon District Council's offices, went up in flames early this morning (Thursday, March 30).
The developers McCarthy Stone were due to convert The Knowle into a care home and retirement accommocation, and had submitted a planning application to EDDC.
The company has now provided the Herald with the following statement:
"McCarthy Stone is aware of the unfortunate incident that has occurred at the former Council Offices on its site at The Knowle and will be working closely with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service to ascertain the cause of the fire. Once the fire has been safely extinguished, McCarthy Stone will ensure that the site is made fully safe and secure.
“McCarthy Stone will be visiting the site today, with members of the team knocking on doors of immediate neighbours to provide reassurance. In addition to our current security measures, a dog patrol team will be in operation over the next few days.
“McCarthy Stone will continue to keep neighbours updated regarding this matter and the site’s future redevelopment. Any residents with any further queries are welcome to get in touch via the project’s information line (0800 298 7040) or via email feedback@mccarthystoneconsultation.co.uk.”
