MILDRED BETTLEY

MILDRED BETTLEY , who taught piano in Sidmouth for 35 years, passed away peacefully on 25th December 2021. Born in Warrington, Cheshire, she trained in piano and singing at the Northern School of Music (a forerunner of the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester) from 1956 to 1961 under some of the most renowned music educators of the day. She moved to Sidmouth in 1978 and went on to become a passionate private teacher, specialising in beginners and building her reputation upon encouraging all-round musicianship from the very outset until her retirement in 2012. Teaching aside, Mildred was an irrepressible creative spirit with an extraordinary personal faith and an independent mind. A skilled needlewoman with an equal passion for fashion design and dress, a visionary artist, and a devoted mother and friend, she left an indelible mark on all those who knew her. She leaves two children, Katherine and Sebastian, and grandchildren Zayd, Safa, Maryam and Bayan. The funeral service will take place at Walton Lea Crematorium, Warrington, on 1st February. For those who knew her locally, a charitable concert dedicated to her memory is hoped for at a safe later date.
