This month, image curator Alex Walton takes a look at the 1980 collection of Sidmouth Herald news photographs.
The solemn sight of Sidmouth residents gathered around the war memorial on Remembrance Day in 1980, is one of many striking pictures retrieved from the Herald archives this month. Also found is an endearing image of a newborn foal with its mother and their keeper and a small crowd of admiring spectators at the Donkey Sanctuary. Another super photo depicts the young Bagwell lads on the beach with their monster 25lb cod catch.
These pictures including others, such as a flower show, rugby trials and a ploughing match, are but some of the many thousands of images in the archive that show the varied life and times of Sidmouth townsfolk in 1980.
